Hey everyone! This post is a little different than my usual DIY project. I’m going to try to be transparent and share with you a little about our finances and how we are (financially) preparing for the future.
As you may know, we are a family of four on one income. Through lots of trial and error, we are finally figuring out a budgeting system that works for us. With our big move to Georgia and our recent purchase of a new home, we wanted to make sure that we were still saving enough for our girls’ college costs, retirement, and any unforeseen expenses that may arise in the near future.
With this increase in financial responsibility, I knew I needed to reach out to a 3rd party for expert advice and consultation to help us prepare for the future. I don’t have much time away from the home to schedule important meetings (without the kids) so I agreed to sign up for SUM180, an online financial planning service, to help us develop an in depth financial plan and write a post on their behalf.
Creating Our Financial Plan
We started the process by filling out a series of worksheets to help organize ourselves before the interview. I really liked the Spending Tracker worksheet because it put all of my spending in front of me and gave me more insight into how much I actually spend in certain categories. Let me just say that we blow our food and household supply budget most months. SMH!
The interview takes place online as well, so no need to quiet your family or get out of your pajamas. Once I organized my account balances and expenses in the worksheets, I literally had all the information I needed for the interview.
After the SUM180 consultants got a better gist of who we are and what our financial goals are for the future, they uploaded an in-depth financial plan into our portal. This Plan let us know where we stood now and gave us 3 actionable steps to begin to take. I love that they only gave 3 steps because we didn’t feel overwhelmed with what they planned for us. When we fulfill these steps, we will revise our plan and move forward with 3 more steps. If we ever need additional consultation, we can always schedule an appointment to chat with someone over the phone for an additional fee. They also have an excellent online community where you can share thoughts and questions with the SUM180 consultants and other community members.
f you are in a similar situation as us and you don’t really know what steps to take towards financial security, go to SUM180.com and see if this service interests you.
