Hey friends! My office has been some what of a hot mess lately and in much need of a face lift. I have been struggling to find the perfect balance between decorative yet functional pieces that fit the feel of the space. Of course this deficit has caused me to whip up a few DIY projects that I am absolutely loving. Today, I am going to share with you a tutorial on how to chalk paint mason jars to use in office organization (or not).
What I love about these jars is they are super inexpensive. I bought a box of 12 for around 8 bucks a few months ago and I am just now getting to use them.
What you will need to Chalk Paint Mason Jars…
Chalk Paint (I love these 2oz acrylic chalk paints found because they come in a bunch of colors for super cheap)
Foam paint brush
Matte Primer (Optional)
Matte Finisher (Optional, but recommended)
How to Chalk Paint Mason Jars
Step 1: If your jars have been previously used, you will want to clean them with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue that may be left behind. If they are fresh out of the box you can move to Step 2.
Step 2: Spray paint your jars with a matte white primer. This will give your chalk paint something to hold on to, as well as reduce the amount of coats of chalk paint needed.
Step 3: Apply 2-3 coats of chalk paint to the outside of your jar. Allow ample time for the paint to dry in between coats. I would paint a coat, edit a few pictures, paint another coat, wash dishes, etc. The good news is that chalk paint dries quickly so it shouldn’t take too long.
Step 4: Sand the paint in places where it may realistically get some wear and tear i.e. the words, lip, embellishments, etc. The sanding gives it that rustic feel that I love so much.
Step 5: Spray a matte finisher to set and protect the paint. The finisher will also allow you to get the jars wet (like if you are putting flowers in them).
Since I used these on my desk, I filled them with my favorite Pilot G2 Pens. I love these pens because they come in 15 different colors and 4 different point sizes. They are perfect for color-coding or use in a classroom to grade or proofread. The gel ink is also super smooth and long lasting.
I purchased my G2 Gel Ink pens at Target. Target has a great variety of these pens as well as some awesome exclusive packs that can only be found there.
Mason Jar Office Organization
I love this adorable, rustic look for my desk. My husband and I share the bonus room for our home offices and I like to keep my side looking extra girly to combat all of his manliness. =]
